LASIK and PRK aren't the only state-of-the-art vision correction treatments available at the Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center. In addition to laser eye surgery, our doctors offer the Visian ICL™, an Implantable Corrective Lens to treat patients who may not be eligible to undergo LASIK.
The Visian ICL™ is a special contact lens that is implanted inside the eye and works with the eye's natural lens to produce sharp, clear vision. Crafted from Collamer®, an advanced biocompatible material, the Visian ICL™ Implantable Corrective Lens is completely safe and long lasting. Our Arizona doctors find that the Visian ICL™ greatly increases the number of patients who are able to reduce or even eliminate their dependence on glasses or traditional contact lenses.
The Visian Implanted Corrective Lens is intended for use by patients between the ages of 21 and 45 who are nearsighted and have no previous history of ophthalmic disease such as iritis, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy.
Among patients who fit into the above demographic, those most likely to choose the Visian ICL™ at our Arizona practice are those who do not meet the eligibility requirements for LASIK. For example, patients with extremely thin corneas or those predisposed to dry eye syndrome might have less than optimal results from LASIK. However, the Visian ICL™ requires no change to the cornea and does not contribute to such conditions as dry eye, making it an excellent choice for these patients.
The only way to determine if you are a candidate for the Implantable Corrective Lens from Visian is to have a thorough ophthalmic exam by a doctor familiar with the Visian ICL™. To schedule a consultation at one of our Arizona locations, contact Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center.
To prepare your eyes for the implantation of the Visian ICL™, your doctor will use a laser to make a small opening between your lens and the front chamber of your eye. This is performed one or two weeks before surgery and allows fluid to freely pass between the two areas.
On the day of surgery, your surgeon will administer anesthetic eye drops to numb the area. A very small incision will then be made where the cornea meets the sclera, or white of the eye. Through this opening, the doctor will inject gel into your eye to facilitate the placement of the ICL behind the iris and in front of the eye's natural lens. Finally, the placement gel will be removed and the procedure is complete. No sutures are necessary.
The entire procedure takes only about 15 minutes, plus two or three hours for recovery. After being fitted with Visian Implanted Corrective Lenses at our Arizona eye center, you will need to have someone drive you home.
More and more of the patients who come to Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center choose the Visian ICL™ because of its clear advantages over glasses, contacts, and, in some cases, LASIK and PRK.
The Visian Implanted Corrective Lens is completely removable and replaceable. If your prescription changes dramatically in the years following the implantation procedure, the lenses can be removed easily with no ill effects. Most patients who receive the Visian ICL™, however, never need to have any maintenance on the lenses at all.
Because Implantable Corrective Lenses do not disturb or change the corneal surface at all, side effects sometimes seen with LASIK such as halos, glare, and corneal flap complications are eliminated.
Possibly the biggest advantage of the Visian ICL™ is that more patients than ever before are able to undergo surgical vision correction. People who cannot undergo LASIK, such as those with thin corneas, chronically dry eyes, or extreme refractive error, can enjoy the benefits of the Visian ICL™.
